Submissions
Please note that we no longer accept print submissions. Electronic submissions should consist of a query letter detailing the book in question and your qualifications, as well as the reason you’re reaching out to the particular agent being queried. For fiction, you should also include a synopsis and the first ten pages of a novel or one short story from a collection in the body of the email. For non-fiction, please include a synopsis in the body of the email. If you already have a full proposal, you may feel free to attach it to your message, labeling the attachment clearly with your name and the title of the work.
Given the high volume of submissions we receive, we unfortunately are not able to respond to queries we decide not to pursue. Please know that even if we do not pursue your submission, we are grateful for your interest.
Our primary areas of interest include literary fiction, suspense and thrillers, genuinely high-concept science fiction and fantasy, narrative non-fiction (history, biography, science, et cetera), book club fiction, YA and middle-grade works, memoir, and some category non-fiction. We enthusiastically seek out new voices and perspectives, in all languages. We do not represent romance, poetry, or screenplays.
To submit, please scroll down to find out which agent might be best for your query and submit to them at the email address provided. Please do not query multiple agents at the same time.
Who We Are
Markus Hoffmann
Markus Hoffmann joined Regal Literary in 2006 and was made a partner in the agency in 2014, when it became Regal Hoffmann & Associates. He studied English and Russian literature and linguistics in Munich, Moscow, and at Hertford College, Oxford, and started his career in publishing in London in the late 90s before relocating to New York City in 2004. He still betrays his transatlantic allegiance by insisting on the proper pronunciation of the words basil, tomato, and herb (among others). If he ever writes a book, it will be called WHY PUNS MATTER. His main interests as an agent are international and literary fiction, genre-redefining speculative fiction, crime, literary memoir, philosophy, history, music, popular science, and travel literature. He also looks after the agency’s foreign rights. He's obsessed with surfing and capoeira and plays the trumpet in the publishing jazz combo The Editörial Standards.
To submit to Markus, please email submissions@rhaliterary.com.
Elianna Kan
Elianna Kan has been at Regal Hoffmann since 2017. She began her publishing career at Picador and as Senior Editor of The American Reader, where she edited literature in translation. After several years as a Spanish reader for Maria B. Campbell Associates and various US publishers, she decided to immerse herself more fully in the Latin American publishing world by moving to Mexico City where she worked as a consultant for Penguin Random House Mexico's Foreign Rights Director. She continues splitting her time between New York and Mexico. Elianna is a native of New Hampshire with a BA in Literary Studies and a background in theater from Middlebury College. She has studied Critical Theory at the University of Buenos Aires and is currently pursuing an MA at the Bread Loaf School of English. She is a native Russian speaker and speaks Spanish fluently. She has written about the Latin American publishing market for Publishing Perspectives and has interviewed writers and theater-makers on behalf of The Paris Review, BOMB Magazine, and The Believer. She has a passion for interdisciplinary cultural programming and teaches creative writing and literary translation at Columbia University. Elianna is actively building a list of Spanish-language fiction and non-fiction writers and is interested in literature in translation in general.
